Una vicenda vissuta in prima fila nelle trincee degli anni ottanta, tra interminabili tour, sfide all’ultimo accordo e notti trascorse sui materassi più precari di un’Europa ancora divisa. La seconda storia è quella di Stephania Giacobone, una giovane della Valle d’Aosta che s’appassiona a una band nata dalle sue parti tanti anni prima, al punto da prendere dalla musica e dal loro immaginario, gli strumenti adatti per iniziare un percorso di riscatto personale. L’incontro di Stephania con Gianpiero segnerà la chiusura del cerchio che ha come esito un libro scritto sul crinale di una memoria in grado di agire sul presente, in contrapposizione all’oblio nostalgico. L’ultima parte del volume è dedicata all’apparato iconografico e alle testimonianze dei partecipanti al viaggio dei Kina, tra cui il chitarrista Alberto e il batterista Sergio. Canzoni e generi musicali hanno caratterizzato varie fasi della nostra storia recente, lasciando un segno profondo nella memoria collettiva. Poca attenzione, però, è stata prestata alle forme di produzione, circolazione e ricezione delle musiche che hanno accompagnato i momenti di tensione politica e di scontro culturale. Si tratta di un vasto patrimonio di pratiche e di esperienze diffuse che delinea una sorta di vero e proprio «contro canto» della storia italiana. Il percorso tracciato in questo libro parte dall’analisi del canto sociale e politico di quelle che Antonio Gramsci definiva «le classi subalterne», prosegue con le vicende dei gruppi e dei movimenti che negli anni della contestazione si opposero all’omologazione di massa cercando di coniugare sperimentazione culturale e attivismo politico e arriva alle nuove forme espressive della conflittualità sociale negli anni del rap e dei centri sociali, con l’invenzione di inedite sonorità che intrecciano la riscoperta della memoria storica dei canti di lotta con la reinvenzione dei dialetti e delle identità locali, a cavallo tra culture giovanili, antagonismo politico, mercato discografico e libera diffusione tramite la rete. La creatività dei gruppi sociali in conflitto con la cultura ufficiale viene qui ricostruita mediante un viaggio tra le vicende del movimento operaio, dei movimenti sociali e delle culture giovanili, delineando un’originale rilettura della storia culturale italiana. Ispirato agli esiti più maturi dei cultural studies, questo lavoro mostra come, scavando nelle pieghe della produzione culturale e musicale, sia possibile leggere, in controluce, la storia del conflitto tra cultura alta e cultura popolare, tra consumo culturale di massa e avanguardie militanti, tra progetti egemonici dell’industria culturale e le forme e le pratiche di resistenza dal basso.
