Finalmente un libro sulla più sconosciuta e seminale tra le sottoculture inglesi: il northern soul. Un fenomeno complesso e impossibile da definire, uno splendido mistero di passione, senso di appartenenza, identità, amore per la musica e la danza. La stesse due parole che lo connotano sono alquanto generiche, inventate dal giornalista e dj Dave Godin per descrivere i dischi a cui erano interessati i clienti del suo negozio che arrivavano prevalentemente dal nord dell’Inghilterra. La scena era formata In maggioranza da giovani maschi bianchi provenienti dalle famiglie della working class ma non c’era un’estetica unificante, persino la musica si poteva aprire a mille influenze o chiudere in ristretti canoni sonori. Difficile distinguere la differenza tra un raro e dimenticato singolo di soul (genericamente uscito tra il 1965 e il 1970) e una classica hit della Motown. Talvolta proprio il fatto che il brano non avesse avuto riscontro commerciale era la garanzia di una maggiore purezza artistica. In questo libro si è lasciato ampio spazio alle testimonianze di alcuni protagonisti per tessere una trama più esaustiva possibile e che si riassume alla perfezione nel classico motto: Keep the Faith!&#13;
