                <text>Il gruppo Mutoid Waste Company nasce nella Londra thatcheriana dall'incontro di artisti, attivisti e meccanici per creare sculture ad alto contenuto distopico, recuperando materiale di scarto. Con le loro performance hanno anticipato e influenzato la cultura rave e molte delle pratiche sociali che si sono opposte al grande business delle multinazionali dell'intrattenimento. Fin dall'inizio hanno scelto di vivere in comunità all'interno di edifici e capannoni dismessi o costruendo villaggi a impatto zero nelle zone abbandonate, come Mutonia a Santarcangelo di Romagna, convertendo camion, bus e furgoni in case sempre in movimento. Nel loro trentennale cammino sui terreni fertili dell'underground hanno raggiunto ogni angolo del mondo, gettando i semi del suffisso oide per sottolineare il concetto di mutazione al quadrato, un'originale utopia che non tollera alcuna separazione tra vita e arte e che ha come simbolo il riutilizzo creativo del rifiuto, in alternativa ai banali modelli della società dei consumi. Mutate or die ripercorre le principali tappe del loro viaggio attraverso una moltitudine di testimonianze orali, un racconto dettagliato della loro storia alla ricerca di un immaginario ribelle ed ecosostenibile. Un vero e proprio antidoto a un futuro postapocalittico che sembra destinato a generare nuove diseguaglianze e ingiustizie e che perciò necessita di essere cambiato nel qui e ora del presente.</text>

                <text>Nelle scienze sociali si fa spesso riferimento alla “svolta culturale”; ma il modo solitamente sbrigativo con cui si allude al percorso storico che ha portato all’attuale enfasi sulla cultura merita di essere ribaltato secondo una prospettiva capace di riconsegnare il senso e le ricadute di una trasformazione che ha rimesso i fenomeni culturali al centro della conoscenza. Questo libro nasce proprio dall’esigenza di ricostruire storicamente il cambiamento di approccio e di pensiero che ha attraversato i diversi campi delle scienze sociali, determinando un distanziamento dalle epistemologie positiviste a favore dell’interpretazione dei significati dell’agire umano. La svolta culturale non costituisce un paradigma proposto in maniera unitaria, consapevole e programmatica da parte di un gruppo coeso di autori, ma coagula un insieme di tendenze nuove, asistematiche e indipendenti che convergono, in momenti e modi diversi, verso un generale ri-orientamento delle scienze sociali e una maggiore e più estesa considerazione della cultura, dei fenomeni culturali e del loro carattere simbolico. Eventi e fenomeni extra-accademici hanno accompagnato e stimolato questa radicale trasformazione: il movimento per i diritti civili, il femminismo, le contestazioni giovanili e più in generale tutte le rivendicazioni di fine secolo hanno favorito l’emergere della cultura come aspetto fondamentale dell’esistenza soggettiva e collettiva.</text>

                <text>Quando il 5 aprile 1994 Kurt Cobain si spara un colpo in testa diventa mediaticamente l’agnello sacrificale e cambia per sempre il corso della Storia. Con l’avvento di internet prima e dei social poi, attraversando il G8 di Genova e l’11 Settembre, si produce una colonna sonora in cui l’underground diventa genere, stile e cultura. In una parola: indie. Il pensiero sotto traccia cerca una sua strada per diventare discorso comune, creare un nuovo immaginario collettivo senza perdere la sua missione originaria, quella di essere controcultura. Tuttavia, qualcosa è andato storto: le idee che la musica indie trasportava non hanno avuto l’esito sperato. Dal tramonto dei sogni della generazione X all’avvento di Spotify che cambia per sempre l’approccio all’ascolto, questa è una storia che si concentra sul ‘ventennio breve’ 1994-2012, e lo fa attraverso la musica: il racconto di una sconfitta o le basi di una futura rinascita?</text>

                <text>Quanto bisogna risalire nel tempo per raccontare la nascita dei graffiti? Fino alle grotte di Lascaux, alle incisioni sulle pareti di Pompei, o ai disegnetti virali lasciati dai soldati americani durante la guerra? Di certo è a partire dai primi anni ’70 del secolo scorso, tra i ragazzini dei quartieri poveri che iniziano a taggare le strade di Philadelphia e New York, che il fenomeno prende piede, esplode e dilaga in tutto il mondo. Da allora è un proliferare di nomi, un evolversi di stili e filoni in cui è quasi impossibile mettere ordine. Nonostante la repressione sempre più dura e l’ossessione per il decoro, oggi i graffiti sono ovunque, hanno vinto. La street art si vende nelle case d’asta, si usa in pubblicità, diventa addirittura strumento della speculazione immobiliare. Cosa è rimasto dello spirito clandestino delle origini? Per scoprirlo, questo romanzo ci porta tra gallerie d’arte e depositi dei treni, con il cappuccio della felpa tirato su e un paio di bombole nello zaino, a sentire l’odore della vernice e l’adrenalina che sale improvvisa, muovendosi nel buio per mordere la carne della città e rivendicare il diritto di esistere in uno spazio urbano dominato dalle logiche del profitto.</text>
