Canzoni e generi musicali hanno caratterizzato varie fasi della nostra storia recente, lasciando un segno profondo nella memoria collettiva. Poca attenzione, però, è stata prestata alle forme di produzione, circolazione e ricezione delle musiche che hanno accompagnato i momenti di tensione politica e di scontro culturale. Si tratta di un vasto patrimonio di pratiche e di esperienze diffuse che delinea una sorta di vero e proprio «contro canto» della storia italiana. Il percorso tracciato in questo libro parte dall’analisi del canto sociale e politico di quelle che Antonio Gramsci definiva «le classi subalterne», prosegue con le vicende dei gruppi e dei movimenti che negli anni della contestazione si opposero all’omologazione di massa cercando di coniugare sperimentazione culturale e attivismo politico e arriva alle nuove forme espressive della conflittualità sociale negli anni del rap e dei centri sociali, con l’invenzione di inedite sonorità che intrecciano la riscoperta della memoria storica dei canti di lotta con la reinvenzione dei dialetti e delle identità locali, a cavallo tra culture giovanili, antagonismo politico, mercato discografico e libera diffusione tramite la rete. La creatività dei gruppi sociali in conflitto con la cultura ufficiale viene qui ricostruita mediante un viaggio tra le vicende del movimento operaio, dei movimenti sociali e delle culture giovanili, delineando un’originale rilettura della storia culturale italiana.
